Milk Allergy Symptoms

Milk-allergysMilk allergy is the most common food allergy among children. Though cow’s milk is the general cause of milk allergy, milk from buffalo, goats and sheep also cause reaction. Also, some children who’re allergic to cow’s milk are also allergic to soy milk. Usually, milk allergy occurs for a few minutes to few hours after consuming the milk. Milk allergy symptoms may range from mild to severe and includes digestive problems, hives, wheezing and vomiting.

Occasionally, milk allergy causes anaphylaxis, which is a dangerous life threatening reaction. Avoiding milk is the primary treatment for milk allergy. Luckily, children outgrow this allergy by the age of 3.

Milk Allergy Symptoms

Milk allergy symptoms may vary from person to person and severe side effects may occur immediately after drinking cow’s milk or after several days or hours. Sometimes, allergy develops after prolonged milk ingestion. Milk allergy can be categorized into three:

  • Type 1: People show adverse reactions immediately after consuming small amounts of cow’s milk. Symptoms comprise of skin infections like eczema, hives and so on. Respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms may or may not be present.
  • Type 2: People show symptoms after several hours of drinking milk. Diarrhea and vomiting are the symptoms of this type.
  • Type 3: This type comprises of people who develop signs twenty hours or after days after drinking milk. Diarrhea which may or may not be accompanied with skin allergies or respiratory symptoms is the symptom of milk allergy.

It is observed that milk allergy afflicts the respiratory system, gastrointestinal tracts and skin. The following are some Milk Allergy Symptoms:

• Hyperactive and irritability behavior
• Failure to thrive
• Recurrent bronchitis
• Fluid accumulation behind the ears and ear infections
• Allergic shiners, itchy and watery eyes
• Swelling of face, throat, lips, tongue or mouth
• Shortness of breath and wheezing
• Nasal stuffiness
• Sneezing, coughing and chronic runny nose
• Loose stools
• Recurrent diarrhea
• Excessive abdominal and colic cramps
• Bloating, abdominal pain and vomiting
• Skin rashes, eczema and hives

Anaphylaxis

In some rare cases, milk allergy can trigger anaphylaxis. This is a life threatening condition which narrows airways and causes breathing difficulty. If you or your kid is allergic to milk, consult the doctor immediately. Tests can help in confirming the allergic reaction. Anaphylactic shock is a medical emergency and needs to be treated with an epinephrine shot. Symptoms occur immediately after consuming milk. Symptoms of anaphylactic shock include:

• Itching
• Facial flushing
• Constriction of airways that includes a swollen throat
• Shock which results in drop in blood pressure

You can consult an allergist or doctor if you or your child experiences the above milk allergy symptoms. When you observe the allergic reaction occurring, you can see your doctor immediately. This will help the doctor to treat you or your child effectively.
